A virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer, Charles Mingus is considered one of the most influential artists in 20th century American music.
A protégé of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Duke Ellington, Mingus recorded over 100 albums and wrote over 300 scores. From the 1960’s until his death in 1979 at age 56, Mingus remained in the forefront of American music.
His masterwork, Epitaph, was discovered and completed after his death. The work was first performed in 1989 by the 30-piece EpitaphOrchestra, conducted by the world renowned conductor, Gunther Schuller. This unprecedented concert 10 years after his death was produced by Sue Mingus, wife of the legendary musician. In honor of the composer’s 85th birthday, a limited tour of Epitaphwill be presented during 2007 at a very few prestigious
